Product Reviews

“It’s Easy to make phone calls with the physical buttons.

Being able to make a quick recording on a phone call is a big plus.  As a matter of fact, one of the options while on a phone call is “record call” which is very helpful especially for totally blind users. This was a very handy feature on the nokia n82 and Nokia N95. We could record directions or an address to a restaurant or just information being given to us over the phone which normally requires a pen and paper for sighted individuals.

You can actually operate the menus and hear the feedback on a call with the phone up to your ear.

I turned off the auto rotate feature so the touch screen would remain in portrait mode.

We installed Kaptain maps for California.

We would like to be able to grab security updates directly from Google.

I was able to change the voice on the phone.”

“It is redundant to say that we very much liked the phone, that, for the most part, it is the ideal phone not only for older people, but for those who don’t care much for touch screens.

My first impressions were that the unit is not only the correct size, but it also has very good sound.  The system is comprehensive enough that someone with basic skills should not have problems manipulating it.

Naturally the most important feature (GPS) is almost ideal.  However, there are a few aspects that, without being a deal breaker, would constitute something to report to the company who makes it.

  1. The prompts are not spoken automatically, leaving the user who does not have much experience listening to TTS voices in “the dark” since one must use the arrows in order to know the content of the warning ()which is the only word spoken automatically).
  2. On the “Free navigation menu”, there is a bit of a lag in the response when sudden change of direction occurs.  The machine will not realize these changes until the user reaches the next corner.  This may confuse someone who may have problems with orientation; after all, you may be going in circles simply by the fact of not knowing the direction in which you are going.  This is not really a [problem if and when the user is familiar with the area where he is walking.
  3. The minimum distance it uses as warning before reaching an intersection is 10.00 meters; yet, this is very uncertain because when standing at an intersection (more concretely at the curb) the machine keeps warning of approximately ten meters before the intersection.  Though I don’t think this is too crucial in the navigation aspect of the software, it may still confusing for users who want to rely on a distance estimate.
  4. The user must be aware that in order to retrace a rout, it is important to use the “Recording Track” function.  The reason I mention this, is the need to retrace a route some students who are newly blind and require of something to let them know what rout they followed.

Those are the basic concerns I can point out in relation to the GPS part of this phone.

The other components of the software bundle are very good.  We tested the OCR, the color identifier and the light detector.  They performed within the parameters we expected.  The only problem was that we could not test the book reader; not because it did not work, but because we could not find the way to interface the phone with the computer.  We re-started the computer, the phone  and even do a hard reset on the phone, and even after all these steps we were unsuccessful.  I hope other were luckier than we were.

Among the very good qualities of this machine is the fact that the battery holds quite well (especially when using the GPS).  Also, the sound quality on the phone is superb, and I think that is one of the best things it offers.”

“We already like the fact that a phone call can be recorded because if someone is giving directions or I just want to record a voicemail, I can now do that with this phone.”
